Harnessing technology to improve travel experiences

Tyler Technologies is a leader in software and services for the public sector with more than 7,000 employees, located predominantly in North America and Southeast Asia.

The company decided to switch to Solutions Travel as their TMC and adopt Spotnana’s Travel-as-a-Service platform to streamline booking processes, improve servicing for travelers, and reduce overall travel costs.

The switch to using Solutions Travel as their travel management company (TMC) came in response to growing challenges with their legacy travel system. Key stakeholders identified three primary objectives: improving user experience, increasing policy compliance, and implementing real-time reporting.

Technology-first mindset

Tyler Technologies wanted a fresh start after making a large acquisition in 2021, aiming to get everyone on the same travel platform. Since employees travel regularly to serve city governments across the country and in other parts of the world, the company was attracted to Spotnana’s modern, mobile-friendly booking experience and self-service change capabilities. 

Tyler Technologies also needed a solution that supported its specific needs based on billable vs. non-billable travel, specific card requirements for specific cities, and more.

“Our goal was not to look at a TMC first, but to look at the technology first because we are a technology company,” said Tamera Pope, Travel Services Manager at Tyler Technologies. “I work with a lot of very technical people, and they want to easily book and manage travel right on their phone.

“When we went to RFP, Solutions Travel came to the top, because we knew that Spotnana was the only product they would be representing.”

After going live with Solutions Travel in early 2024, Tyler Technologies now enjoys a 96% self-service booking rate, along with 86.2% overall policy compliance.

Content and service

Another major factor for selecting Solutions Travel was gaining access to the widest array of global content for Tyler Technologies’ travelers.

American Airlines NDC content was particularly important, as Tyler Technologies’ corporate headquarters is in Texas and serves a variety of communities across the U.S.

“We liked the idea of everybody being able to have access to NDC,” said Pope. “We wanted them to be able to change their flight on their app and not have to go through the airlines’ website or app.”

In addition to airfares, access to a wide array of hotel content has improved the selection and affordability of options for travelers.

“Our hotel attachment rate has improved immensely from about 50% with our previous TMC,” said Pope, with Tyler Technologies’ program now above 75% and increasing with Solutions Travel.

While a wide array of content and self-service change functionality has improved the fundamentals of Tyler Technologies’ travel program, service optionality from Solutions Travel’s experienced group of travel agencies has helped to resolve urgent and more complex issues faced by travelers.

“One thing we love is the chat, because that quickly puts you in touch with an agent, and there’s typically no miscommunication through that channel.”

Easy integrations and future growth

Solutions Travel’s modern technology stack, powered by Spotnana, enabled seamless integration with Tyler Technologies’ HR software, with additional integration planned for the expense management platform.

“The open API approach has worked great for us; by the time we went live with Solutions Travel and Spotnana, we had changed HR products and the transition was seamless,” said Pope.

Conferma payment for hotels was also activated quickly by Solutions Travel to enhance the lodging program for Tyler Technologies.

“We had great project management through Solutions Travel and a great implementation. Spotnana is so different, because you can configure it all yourself. You’re so involved in the setup, and you can change things on the fly.”

With built-in analytics and reporting tools, the travel team can now make data-driven decisions to optimize program performance and cost savings. Beyond existing tools, Tyler Technologies benefits from the continued updates and regular product improvements from Spotnana.

“We wanted a partnership, and we feel like with Solutions Travel and Spotnana, we got the partnership,” said Pope.
